By a UN resolution in 2004, it was decided to celebrate May 8 and May 9 as the days of the end of the Second World War. Honoring official events related to the date are recommended to be held since 2005 in member countries of the UN community. The resolution was agreed upon in connection with the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II throughout the world.

So the day was named in honor of St. Mark of Alexandria, an apostle of the 70 and an evangelist, whose memory is venerated by Christians on this date. The people called Mark the Keymaker, believing that he comes in the spring with the keys to open the heavens for heavy rains. The day was also called a bird holiday, or bird fasting.
